On June 10, local time, Purdue University announced the appointment of 45-year-old Chinese scientist Mung Chiang as the next (13th) president of Purdue University. The current principal, Mitch Daniels, 73, will step down on January 1, 2023, when Jiang Meng will take over.

Meng Jiang has served as dean of the John Edwardson School of Engineering at Purdue University since 2017, and has served as executive vice president for strategy since April 2021. This appointment also makes him the first Chinese-American president in the 153-year history of Purdue University! It is also the second principal to be promoted and appointed from within.

Founded in 1869, Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Purdue University has 13 Nobel Prize winners, including Deng Jiaxian, the father of China’s two bombs, Liang Sili, a first-generation rocket expert, and Chen Xuejun and Wang Buxuan, the founders of thermal energy engineering.
