This class will cover Taylor Swift’s evolution as a creative music entrepreneur, her contributions as a pop and country producer, focusing on the discourse of the teenage generation, and issues of racial politics in contemporary pop music.

It is reported that this course has sent an invitation to Taylor Swift herself, hoping that she can come to the class to speak and share with her classmates. However, the invitation is still pending.

Davis College is chaired by veteran music writer and musician Jason King, including musician Questlove, “Dilla Time” author Dan Charnas, Q-Tip, legendary producer and engineer Bob Power, and others, all of whom teach the college’s curriculum By.

By perusing Taylor Swift’s music and public discourse, deconstruct what drew and disliked her growing up as an artist and celebrity. Through readings, lectures, and more, the course provides an in-depth analysis of popular music, fans, media studies, and more. We will also consider topics such as copyright and ownership, American nationalism, and the continuing impact of social media on the pop music industry.

Course targets

Students will understand and appreciate how Taylor Swift has evolved as a creative music entrepreneur; will learn to deconstruct how her creative, music-making abilities have enabled her to thrive in the fast-growing music industry , with lasting influence. Students will learn about the pop and country songwriters who influenced Taylor Swift, as well as discussions around “prodigies” in the history of popular music. Students will understand how the discourse of the teenage generation is being used in the media and music industry. Students will develop skills in art appreciation, critical thinking, research and writing.
